Aikido Classes
Children (Ages 5-12): Young Zen Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays 5:30 - 6:15 PM
We will emphasize conflict avoidance and getting out of the way, falling and receiving attacks safely, and basic body movement, footwork, & techniques. We promote the spirit of cooperation not competition, and help students build their connection with, and respect for others. We develop physical fitness, coordination, balance, awareness of body, as well as building self-discipline, focus, self-esteem, awareness of surroundings, and learning to be calm in a stressful situation. Most importantly we want kids to know practicing a martial art can be practical, effective, and fun.
Teens & Adults (13 & Up) Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays 6:30 - 8:00 PM
We will cover the basics and essential elements of Aikido (i.e. tai sabaki or body movement, maai, or spacing, footwork, etc.), moving from a calm, stable center, blending, proper extension, to more advanced concepts and techniques (i.e. randori, responding to multiple attackers, jiyu waza, multiple techniques from the same attack, henka waza, switching from one technique to another, etc.). We will integrate weapons work with a bokken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff) and its application to empty hand techniques.
